VP of Engineering

Burner is made by Ad Hoc Labs, a fast-growing startup based in Los Angeles, California.  Our team is looking for the right person for an exciting new role leading our technical organization.

Burner’s mission is to empower people to take control of their identity and privacy, by giving them fully functional and reliable second phone numbers that are augmented with smart features and integrations.  Today, we are a top-grossing app in both iTunes and Google Play, a thriving company with top-tier investors, and a recognized thought leader at the intersection of telecom and consumer mobile software.  Most importantly, we help millions of people protect their privacy.

We’re looking for our first VP of Engineering, a seasoned and passionate technologist, to help ensure our product lives up to our high standards, as well as to help us conceive of and develop the next generations of our product.

You’ll work in a collaborative environment, partnering with outstanding practitioners across product, design, and growth, and will bring passion for shipping outstanding products and for building the culture and processes of a world-class technical team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead our growing technology team and oversee all technology, hiring, and process
  • Take ownership of our technology vision, strategy, and culture

  • Lead engineering efforts to build new products; collaborate closely with key product/design/marketing/operations stakeholders; ship with high reliability and quality

  • Be responsible for and build infrastructure to support our system’s quality, integrity, and resilience, with best practices across client and back-end systems

  • Build/maintain automated systems and predictable operations for core engineering such as QA, CI, monitoring, BCP, etc.

  • Build/maintain/iterate data, analytics, experiment infrastructure

  • Be tuned in to emerging technology trends and use them to identify and enable product innovation

  • Develop and lead a world-class engineering culture

  • Own technology budget & 3rd-party tool integrations

  • Be a key member of executive team to help define and execute company strategy


  • Team and technical leadership experience in startup or other fast-growth environments

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, manage, and develop people, including managers

  • Proven end-to-end ownership of scaled systems with high uptime/integrity and mature process; meaningful impact

  • Clear ability to think across technology innovation, architecture, organization, people, process

  • Orientation to coaching, people development, and building culture, combined with willingness to roll up sleeves

  • Experience in mobile and messaging, or domains with equivalent scale and latency requirements required

  • Familiarity with telecom and related technology landscape highly desired
